The best place to start is to examine your SMTP logs to see how the mail to paypal got in. Basically search the most recent logs which would cover when that mail could have beeen accepted. Basically what your looking for if the connection that delivered the mail logged in. Additionally, if any accounts are full or as a result of any content filter rules, this can result in a bounce message and so if the sender address of an accepted mail matches paypal this could also be the source. I would also recommend that you enable teh daily mail sending limits in the group settings and also within the SMTP settings. These will restrict any SPAM abuse on your system should they ahve a 'way in'.
