530 Account is not local, relaying disallowed.

While testing a new account setup I am recieving " 530 Account is not local, relaying disallowed" when attempting to send to yahoo addresses. Other outbound attempts are returning with the same error. With the same local account, I am able to send mail to hotmail accounts and other locally hosted domains. What are the steps to making adjustments to prevent this?

This error indicates that you are using SMTP authentication on Ability Mail Server (which you must for security) but haven't correctly configured your mail client (e.g. outlook) to log into the outgoing mail server for authentication. In outlook account settings, press the More Settings button and go to the Outgoing Server tab for these options.

Or it's the classic relaying issue where you have users split between your main mail server and this subsidiary one, so the account appears to be non-existent.

You need to untick the box that says “Do Not Try to Relay Mails Addressed to Non-Existent Users”. It's under Settings, Accounts, Domains, Edit.

Thanks Steve. Yes, that can also be the case if you are sending to a local domain but non-existent user on that domain. Either way, if you are sending from an Ability user you should use SMTP authentication on your mail client.

Hi,

I have the same message "530 Account is not local, relaying disallowed.", because we have configured an email address without authentication on a PLC machine (specific production equipment). With this equipment we cannot configure the SMTP authentication, we can only mention the mail server and the email address to send the email.

Obviously, our server is configured with the SMTP authentication and we do not want to disable this option.

Do you know if it is possible to bypass the SMTP authentication ? Is it possible to disable the SMTP authentication only for this email account ?

Thank you and have a good weekend !

As we also confirmed by email, you can only add IP addresses to the relaying safe IP list to allow things like a website on a fixed IP to send emails via Ability Mail Server. Allowing a particular email address to send without authentication would not be recommended as then anyone could relay email using this email address to any other email address, making your mail server an open relay which would then get banned by RBLs quite quickly. You would need to authenticate by IP or some limiting factor to protect against open relaying from this email address. Let us know if you have any ideas for a feature and we can discuss that further.
