Email being blocked by RBL 'Spamhaus (SBL)'

Postby bkiser » Fri Mar 22, 2013 6:45 pm

I decided to update my SPAM filter settings today and used the "Add Preset" option to enable some of the RBLs. I got a call from one of our clients telling me they are getting our email rejected. I pulled up the log and this is what I found:

Fri, 22 Mar 2013 09:35:17 -> 64.142.243.72 -> Success: Action=[SPAM Detection Triggered], Details=[SPAM detected by RBL 'Spamhaus (SBL)'.]

But if I go to http://www.spamhaus.org/lookup/ and do a manual lookup on that IP it says that it isn't listed in any of there lists. Why would they be blocked if they aren't in the lists?

Thank you,

Ben

There are a few SPAMHaus RBLs as far as I know but couldn't be sure without more details. You can white list certain IPs but there is also a trigger count for RBLs so that a user has to be on at least that many to be counted as SPAM. Try raising that number or disabling the RBL if it's not reliable. You could also contact the RBL owners to query the specific IP with them if you want too.

hi,

if you havent already i would make sure you setup a SPF record http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sender_Policy_Framework
as its getting more required now.
you can set this up here: http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/safety/content/technologies/senderid/wizard/
after its all sorted and its been added to your domain txt record go to this site and check your email and domain setup.
http://mxtoolbox.com/ type your domain name in and click mx lookup
click the blacklist check which checks 90 known blacklists, if all is ok then move down the page and click smtp test and this checks
to make sure your domain and email server is setup correctly or as good as it can be.
Hope this helps.
