Double email

Double email

Postby skeating » Thu Apr 27, 2017 1:13 pm

Hello
Some of my accounts receive the same message twice, either at the same time or a few minutes apart. I have read the message: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2154, and looked at my SMTP logs. I am using the SPAM scanner that comes with AMS, and it is behind a pfSense firewall. Could the delay from firewall to server be causing the doubling? Here is an example of one from a message I know was duplicated:

-> Success: Action=[Close Connection]
-> Success: Action=[Accept Connection], Details=[Port 25]
-> Success: Action=[Close Connection]
-> Success: Action=[Accept Connection], Details=[Port 25]
-> Success: Action=[Received Hello], Details=[Host=lenten.meetptx.us]
-> 204.188.246.46 -> Success: Action=[Received Sender], Details=[CNN-Report@lenten.meetptx.us]
-> Success: Action=[Received Recipient], Details=[email.net]

I have deleted the IPs and change the name of the recipient. Can you see anything from this that might suggest what the problem is?

Thanks
Stephen Keating

Usually, the only cause for getting double emails are:

1. The user has aliases and matches on more than one recipient. Although in most of these cases you still shouldn't receive 2 emails.
2. Emails are being downloaded via POP3 Retrievals from an external account.
3. Content filtering is duplicating the email for that recipient.
4. 2 Emails were sent via SMTP, but this would show in the SMTP logs.

The delay from the firewall shouldn't cause the email to be received twice.

So if someone is downloading their email to either Outlook or a phone mail app, that could cause message doubling?

You'd be best checking via WebMail or IMAP4 if there are duplicate emails.

Downloading to a phone shouldn't cause a duplicate unless the POP3 client is doing something wrong. Obviously, Outlook shouldn't have any issues with bugs like that.
