SMTP Delay

SMTP Delay

Postby BBMB32 » Thu Sep 11, 2008 4:54 am

Here's the scenario:

I have the outgoing SMTP on Thunderbird set to 192.168.10.30 (the ip of my email server) and the sending status takes 5-8 secs (I've timed it). It says connected to 192.168.10.30, but just keeps thinking.

I changed the outgoing SMTP on Thunderbird to mail.mydomain.net (which is just going out to the internet to come back into my router, and going to 192.168.10.30). It goes lightning fast. The sending status just flashes and the mail is sent.

I don't have delayed transactions turned on.

Why would this be happening?

Make sure you don't have transaction delays enabled as you mentioned. Check there is no antivirus software running in the background of the client or mail server intercepting and slowing down the connection. Also check that the direct IP doesn't take the connection through a different route to your mail server than via your router.
