In Firefox 2, when you are switching between pages, most of the time it just prints out

I've just tested this on our system with Firefox and don't get any errors. It's most likely that some antivirus, proxy, firewall or router software is intercepting and changing the HTTP that gets sent causing this redirect to break and not work. Try accessing remote admin on the FTP server machine directly to potentially rule out it being your firewall or router then just experiment with removing these things one by one to see if you can eliminate the problem.
