I've been using the mailing list for just over 1 year without any issues. Over the last few weeks, I've had issue with a mailing list that I haven't modified since I started it a year ago.

I'm relaying my mail through my ISP (smtp-server.neo.rr.com) and nothing is getting sent to users outside of my locally hosted domains when it's coming from the mailing list. However, when I send mail from me directly to anyone outside of my local doamins, one or multiple recipients in the message, it has no problems getting there.

It says is was sent successfully, but those emails are lost. They never come through and they are not in the SPAM folders.

In the log below, I changed the smtp info for the mail relay to my Godaddy SMTP relay: smtpout.secureserver.net. Again, I send an email to TestList@XXXXXX.net and here is the log from the outmail.txt:

So far, the only way I can get the mailing lists to kind of work is to set the outgoing route to my ip address: 65.25.XX.XX. This is my RoadRunner IP and hasn't changed ever. However, AOL and Yahoo email addresses on the lists do not get delivered because I'm guessing AOL and Yahoo (and I'm sure others) use reverse DNS lookup and it's going from my IP which doesn't resolve to my domain.

What more can I do to figure out what has happened?

I had a similar problem with Plus.net when they changed their configuration for outgoing emails.

The Mailing list does not send a Sender Address when sending the mailing list email, this caused my SMTP server to reject the email.

I solved this in a similar way, buy using a different SMTP relay service, or sending emails using independent mode.

although this doesnt explain why the SMTP server is not rejecting them when they are initially delivered to the SMTP relay. (this could just be the spam setup of the relay)

Your original relay appears to be delivered to the ISP fine. If mails aren't delivered after that it's something at the ISP that's causing it which is impossible to know without contacting them or the destination mail server administrator for error log messages to explain the reason for any rejection.

The second relay has rejected your mailing list email on the basis that bounce messages (no SMTP sender) should have only one recipient and rejects on the second recipient and thereafter. Mailing lists don't have an SMTP sender because this would mean that loads of failure delivery messages would bounce back to the sender which isn't really a user which is pointless. We are adding a new bounce feature in version 3 which adds a bounce SMTP sender address which will remove recipients from the list after so many failed deliveries and bounce backs if you enable the option. You can add an SMTP sender for the mailing list using content filtering but I'd recommend you find out which your original ISP relay mails are getting lost after successful delivery to them.

I fixed the issue by setting 'Max Recipients per Transaction' to 1. I am now able to relay through my local ISP with out any issue.

An empty SMTP sender in the mail with just one recipient is the format used for bounce back responses to inform a sending mail server that delivery to Ability Mail Server failed due to the account no existing or being full etc. Mailing lists also use an empty SMTP sender for the same reason that the mail is from the mail system or a mailing list account, neither of which can receive any replies so no return address is given. In this case, the ISP will accept delivery status notifications (one recipient) but not mailing lists (many recipients) so by sending the mailing list one recipient at a time this tricks the ISP into allowing the mails through but will obviously take much longer to send.

I am running into the same trouble since my ISP (Time Warner RoadRunner) changed their mail delivery system in April. I have been working with them to try to figure out the problem. They have stated their new configuration looks at the "Return-Path" when it see's multiple recipients and if it is <> (NUL) then it rejects it as Spam. Since AMS does not fill the "Return-Path" all mail from the mailing list destined for their local domain my ISP rejects as spam. They are not willing to change their side so I'm asking if there is anyway to correct this through AMS so I can continue to use the Mailing List feature?

You can set the Reply-To and From header fields in the mailing list settings. However, to configure a full return address you can use content filtering to create the following rule:

Conditions:
Any SMTP Recipient contains "mailinglist@yourdomain.com"

Actions:
Rename SMTP Sender to "returnaddress@yourdomain.com"
Add/Edit header field "Return-Path" to "returnaddress@yourdomain.com"

The return address should probably be a real account on the mail server but you can set up a content / user filter rule to delete all mail to that account. We are adding a proper mail bounce system for miling lists into AMS3 which will allow for a proper return address and other functionality related to this.

Any news on AMS3? I've got a user that is having trouble with my mailing list at his office. Their Postini Spam Filter doesn't like that the MAIL FROM is blank.

I'm tried to change the MAIL FROM field, but with no luck. In my content filtering, I've tried these conditions:

The first action, I check to see if the subject line contains [BakerFamily Email]. If it doesn't, I EDIT "Subject" header field to "[BakerFamily Email] - ####SUBJECT####". Then, I EDIT CUSTOM header field and edit MAIL FROM. THis never gets set. I've tried to edit the FROM header field, but this only edits the FROM field... that one is already populated with the users email address.

Any ideas?

Yes, you need to setup a content filter rule to edit the SMTP sender as shown previously in this forum post.

For example:

Conditions:
Any SMTP Recipient contains "mailinglist@yourdomain.com"

Actions:
Rename SMTP Sender to "returnaddress@yourdomain.com"
Add/Edit header field "From" to "returnaddress@yourdomain.com"
Add/Edit header field "Return-Path" to "returnaddress@yourdomain.com"

The first action is the important one here. Obviously change the conditions and actions to suit your needs.

Thank you for the info. I have content filtering turned, but there isn't a log for it. I know the content filtering works because each email I send, it changes the subject. I have content filtering on Debugging mode and it's not generating any logs?

Any ideas?

Content filtering should generate logs in the "C:\Program Files\Code-Crafters\Ability Mail Server 2\config\logs" folder if enabled. If you are running on Vista you need to run in administrator mode for settings and logs to be stored here otherwise Vista will store them in your user area under the AppData hidden folder.

You can send your remote admin username / password, mail server and remote admin port to chris@code-crafters.com if you want me to check your settings.
