Mass Delete

Mass Delete

Postby bbohac » Sat Aug 02, 2008 2:54 am

Is there any way to delete all emails in an inbox, either via web mail or directly in AMS? I have a user who hasn't deleted emails and has over 20,000 emails in his account. He definitely does not want to go through a page at a time and delete them 25 at a time (806) pages through webmail.
I guess I could just go in and delete all the files directly in his Inbox directory on the server, but will this cause any indexing issues, etc.? Is there a script I could put in the template that would allow the users to delete all emails in a folder rather than having to do a page at a time?

Thanks

With that many emails it will be easier to just delete the mails from the physical Inbox directory using Windows Explorer. The files are stored in "C:\Program Files\Code-Crafters\Ability Mail Server 2\config\accounts\<domain>\<user>\Inbox". Deleting these mails will cause no problems within the mail server with indexing etc.

And by using the Windows File System Search function on the directory containing all the email box folders, you could do this for all accounts and delete emails older than a certain date by sorting the Search Results by date and then doing a group delete (using the Shift Key to select the dated-range of emails in the Search Results window)???

Thanks, I just wanted to make sure that there wouldn't be any indexing problems. For example, webmail looking for 20,000 messages that don't exist anymore. I have scripts that I've written to go through and automatically delete old files, I just didn't want to put AMS into some kind of weird state.

Follow up question: Now is there a way to allow a webmail user to delete all mails in a folder rather than to have to do it one page at a time?

Care to share those scripts?

You can delete an entire folder in WebMail and I think this deletes all emails in the folder but you can't delete the Inbox so this won't work. If you want to delete all emails, Windows Explorer is the easiest way. There will be no indexing problems as the system is built for external editing of files.
