Mail limit

Hi,
Iam using Surgemail to maintain contact with our customer (catalog, etc). We use Groupmail (a program) to maintain the database and do the mailmerge. Recently our mailserver computer died and I had to reinstall. Before surge mail handled everything fine, now the mailmerge computer times out waiting for surge mail. Is there anything I can do to maximize the performance or do I need a faster computer (the old one was faster)
