Move large number of mail items to another mailbox folder

I need to move a large number of mail items from one mailbox folder to another. This will take significant time if I run via the IMAP protocol.

Can I just cut/paste the files from within the directory on the server, or will this cause corruption/other issues?

Yes, you can physically move the files to the other folder. You're best logging out of that user account while you do it as it caches the files so may not update straight away otherwise.
