Lost outgoing messages & more

Postby sus » Wed Nov 14, 2007 5:47 pm

Hi,

We just setup abilitymailserver on a new VPS with Clamwin and a few other apps. We want to use it primarily for our internal email needs. Twice per month, we also send an email to our customer list, about 24000 all together, using lmhsoft e-campaign (a newsletter software) that we point to the smtp server.

We did this yesterday for the first time using ability as a mail server and I have 3 questions:

1 - Countless emails were not delivered. I am not sure how many or if there is a way to find out but several test accounts at gmail, yahoo, our domain names, etc, as well as regular customers and friends did not get their emails. The emails were not in spam folders, we checked. Is there any way to know why and would there be any reasons/settings why abilitymail would just delete emails without telling us?

2 - It took over 5 hours to send those 24000 mails instead of 1-2 hour normally. Does ability slow down emails intentionally or are there settings to edits on abilitymailserver?

3 - We had multiple false positives and eventually had to turn off the scan on outgoing emails option before starting the mailing. Could it be because our newsletter was in html format and, if so, is there a way to adjust the settings from inside ability to prevent the false positives.

Thank you.

Thank you for your interest in Ability Mail Server.

1. Ability Mail Server will not silently delete mail but I would guess that between the news letter software, AMS may have refused some mails if the resources were not available to handle the mails. Although AMS is designed for up to 20,000 users, it is not optimised for large bulk mail sending. This means that the the large surge of mail may have flooded the incoming mail processing systems (even more so if all mails were passing through SPAM scanning systems). Of coures in the SMTP/Outmail logs (or the newsletter logs?) hopefully you will be able to track down where the mails failed.

2. Again, although AMS is desigend for 20,000 users, it is not being optimized for bulk mail sending. In version 3 (due for release next year) we do however plan to change this.

3. I would recommend ensuring the news letter does not trigger SPAM filtering. This can be done by ticking the option "Bypass SPAM Filtering When Allowed Relaying Access" on the SPAM settings and then ensuring that either the newsletter software logs in to the SMTP with a username and password, or you enter its IP into the safe list in the SMTP relaying access settings.

Version 3 is still underdevelopment so I wouldn't expect a release any time soon (this also means we don't have a release date yet). I woudl recommend signing up for the mailing list in the support section in our website to ensure you are notified of any beta releases.
